There are at least 21 opportunities in 2008 for members of the community to attend and learn about the “secret handshakes” openly discussed.  There are some items mentioned and comments made during each meeting that could help a minority student access rigorous academic classes and programs. 

When the tree falls in the forest, it is questionable if the tree makes any sound if no one is there when it falls.  Likewise, it is questionable if a minority student will benefit from the information discussed at school board meetings unless someone from the community hears it and shares it with others.

The MIMS Institute “looks under the rocks,” seeking to find members of the community willing to attend one or more of these meetings on behalf of students, parents, residents, and leaders in zip code 33610 who might not attend the meetings.
